Overview
The Network and Information Systems Directive, also known as NIS2, is one of the most important and up-to-date cybersecurity legislations enacted within the EU member states, aiming to improve the cybersecurity capabilities of member states and businesses. It places greater demands on businesses' compliance, security strategies, and operations, particularly those operating in critical industries and infrastructure sectors. It requires operators to implement appropriate cybersecurity measures and report any incidents to the relevant authorities. Also, it requires organizations not only to ensure that their own security and resiliency are adequate, but also that of their suppliers.
The directive harmonize cybersecurity measures across member states through stricter requirements and wider scope of application, and enhancing the protection of vital industries. It entered into force on January 16, 2023, replacing Directive 2016/1148, also known as NIS. NIS2 requires member states to implement it into national law by October 17, 2024, and to finalize the list of organizations that must comply by April 17, 2025. Each Member State will define the cybersecurity measures to be followed by the entities falling within the scope of NIS2 as part of the national implementation process.
