Overview
In December 2022, the UK government officially passed the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act 2022 (PSTI). In October 2023, the UK Government announced the formal enactment of the PSTI regulation, titled "Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (Security Requirements in relation to Connected Products) Regulation 2023," which took effect on 14 September 2023. The government further declared that the PSTI became mandatory from April 29, 2024. This legislation represents a significant milestone in the UK government's efforts to enhance the security of consumer IoT devices and optimize the deployment of telecommunications infrastructure.
The PSTI requires manufacturers to comply with minimum security requirements, including banning default passwords, requiring a vulnerability disclosure policy, and ensuring transparency about the length of time for which the product will receive important security updates. These measures aim to protect individual privacy and security and guard citizens, networks, and infrastructure against cyber-attacks.
